Saying goodbye can be a good thing

 

This month is Buy-Nothing-New-Month, at least it is in Holland. It’s not something a lot of people have joined, but I have, and it is just about awareness. Do you really need all the stuff you have, and which you think you want to have, and if so, do you really need everything to be brand new, or is vintage/2nd hand good enough. So I’m questioning everything I buy, and don’t buy anything but food. Also I’m cleaning out my closets and drawers, and especially all those little corners in the house which are filled with boxes and bags with things we never use.

Over the years I’ve been collecting lots of stuff for crafting; not only yarn for knitting and crochet, lots and lots of fabrics, threads for embroidery, beads, ribbons, etc. Really the list is endless. One thing I think I’ve never mentioned before, was felting. I’ve done this a lot, many years ago, but because of an allergy for soap, I can’t do it anymore. But I still had a lot of beautiful wool in a box. Look at those colours!!

So, going through my stuff, I saw this box, and decided now was a good moment to let it go. But not before I had made one last little thing with this wool.

Do you know the little soap bars you can find in hotel rooms? That’s what I’ve used. I wrapped the soap in a piece of uncoloured wool, and added little clippings of yarn for the one on top, and pieces of coloured wool for the one on the bottom. The soap needed for felting was already at hand, so all I needed was some warm water.

These smell wonderful, and every time they will be used, they will get felted a little bit more. All you have to do, is make sure they get completely dry every once in a while.

The wool has been sold already, and I love it that it has been bought by a (male!) teacher, who wants to felt with his class. Isn’t that just a great idea?

Remember the socks I made for my mom?  There was enough wool left for another pair, so guess who is having a pair of these lovely socks too?

The colours are just reversed as in my moms socks, but I guess that suits me better anyway.

And last but not least I’ve got a little update regarding the crochet. After attaching the flowers, I’ve made the circle larger until it had a diameter of 40 cm (15.5 inch).

I do like the colours and the look of it, but as you can see it is quite wobbly. So I’m going to try it again, with another stitch count to see if that works. I already did this for the center, and I think it is okay now.
