Fabric Candy

Let me start with saying “Thank You” to all you lovely ladies who left a comment on my last post. This time I just didn’t have the time to respond to you personally. Some people in my extended family are quite ill, and that means a lot of worries and travelling.

Last Sunday, my husband and I took some time off, and we went to a market with only fabrics. More than 150 booths with all kinds of fabric, very cheap, to more expensive, upholstery, fashion fabrics, patchwork fabrics; you name it!

The little owls you see above, are on a piece of cotton I just couldn’t resist…. nor could I a few other cottons:

Doesn’t this make you happy?!

But that wasn’t the only fabric I bought.

These fabrics I’m going to use for some new clothes for myself;

The fabric on the left is from Missoni, an Italian firm with really fabulous designs. This zigzag pattern is one of their signature designs, and I really love it. I’m going to mix it with the limegreen woolen fabric on the right.

This fabric is just so beautiful; this picture doesn’t do it justice at all! It is a blend of wool and silk, and it feels so soft and luxurious. So when I asked the man who was helping in the booth, if I could see this fabric (it was on a shelf quite high!), he didn’t just get it, but he gave me a look, asked if I was sure, and only after that he gave me the fabric. Now I was even more sure I wanted it. When I asked how much it costs, he wanted me first to say what I wanted to make with it. ‘A short, straight skirt’ I answered. Now that was okay. If I had said I wanted to make a coat with it, he wouldn’t have sold the fabric to me. Why?? Because it costs 80 euros, ($104.00) per meter.  I’ve never bought fabric this expensive before, and I must admit it is a bit intimidating. I guess I just have to test a pattern, before using it on this fabric.

  3. Lovely fabric..just a pity we can't feel it too. Your expensive length of fabric is not so expensive when you consider how much it would have cost to buy a skirt of it made by a professional designer. I hope you'll show us when you make up all of your clothes, I can't wait to see the Missoni fabric made up either.

  4. Hi Dorien, I'm sorry to hear about the illness and your worries.
    You have found so beautiful fabrics and those three for cloths are really special! Sometimes we see some material that we just have to have it what ever it cost! It's funny how we can try to save some 'pennies' with other things but when we see some adorable material, we just don't care about the price. I'm sure you will make something wonderful with them and till then you'll enjoy just having them. x Teje
